When you’re shopping for a waterproof infrared heater, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But that’s not really how it works. It’s more about finding the right balance for the size of your room. If you go too low, you’ll be standing there shivering, wondering why it’s still cold. If you go too high, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill—and you might actually burn out the lamp because it can’t “breathe” inside a tight fixture. How to figure out the power you need I usually look at the floor space and the ceiling height first. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (anything under 4m²), a single 250W to 400W short-wave lamp is usually plenty. The best part? You feel the heat instantly. You aren’t waiting for the air to warm up; you just feel that cozy glow on your skin the second you flip the switch. For those bigger master baths (around 6m² to 10m²), one lamp isn’t going to cut it. You’ll want a few of them working together. I’d suggest aiming for a total of 600W to 1000W spread across three lamps. That way, you don’t have one “hot spot” and three cold corners. The “Waterproof” Catch Here’s the thing about those waterproof ratings (IP44 and up). To keep the water out, these lamps have glass or plastic shields. Those shields are great for safety, but they block some of the heat. Think of it like wearing sunglasses; you’re still seeing the light, but it’s not as intense. A 400W lamp behind a thick piece of tempered glass might actually feel more like a 300W lamp in the open air. Keep that in mind when you’re picking your wattage. Saving money and keeping things safe You don’t want your lamps running at full blast forever. That’s just a waste. I always recommend using a timer or a thermostat. It sounds counterintuitive, but a powerful 500W lamp that runs for five minutes is actually cheaper to run than a weak 200W lamp that struggles for twenty minutes to get you warm. Just a heads-up: more power means more pull on your electricity. If you’re installing a few high-power units, double-check that your wiring and breakers can handle the load. Also, make sure the fixture has enough room to vent. High-power lamps get hot—really hot—and if the housing is too cramped, it can actually damage the fixture over time.
