Ever stepped into a freezing bathroom on a winter morning? It’s the worst. Most heaters just try to warm up the air, which takes forever. Infrared is different. It warms you and the surfaces around you directly. It feels more like standing in a patch of sunlight.
Heat, Right Now
The best part about shortwave infrared lamps is that they don’t mess around. They get hot the second you flip the switch. If you hook these up to a Zigbee or Matter relay, you can stop relying on that manual wall switch. I usually set mine for 6:00 AM. By the time I’ve stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom, the walls and tiles are already warm to the touch. No more shivering while you brush your teeth.
The Technical Bit (Keep it Safe)
Here is the thing: these heaters pull a lot of power—anywhere from 500W to 2000W. You can’t just use any cheap smart plug you find in a drawer. You need a heavy-duty smart switch. If you use something too flimsy, the contacts can literally weld themselves shut. Not great. And a quick heads-up on the wiring: if you’re installing a bunch of these lamps, don’t put them all on one circuit. You’ll trip your breaker and be back in the cold. I’d suggest splitting the load across two circuits or getting a dedicated controller to keep things stable.
The Catch
Of course, adding tech always adds a bit of risk. Now you’ve got a digital brain sitting between your power outlet and your heat. If your internet goes down or the smart hub crashes, you’re stuck. That’s why I always tell people to keep a physical bypass switch. It’s a small detail, but it means you aren’t left freezing just because your router decided to reboot at 5:00 AM. It’s a fair trade, though. A little extra wiring for the luxury of a warm room the moment you wake up? I’ll take that deal every time.
