
Keeping Your IR Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom or a steam room is a great idea for comfort, but it’s a nightmare for electricity. Water vapor is sneaky. It finds its way into the housing, creates a path for the current, and suddenly you’ve got a dangerous situation on your hands. To stop that from happening, we lean on IP65-rated enclosures and some smart insulation tricks to keep the power where it belongs.
The deal with IP65 sealing
When you see “IP65,” it basically means the unit is tight enough to keep out dust and handle water jets without breaking a sweat. We use silicone gaskets and heavy-duty cable glands to lock the moisture out. But here’s the thing: if water does manage to sneak in and hit the wiring, you’re looking at a ground fault. To prevent that, we wrap all the internal leads in high-temperature fluoropolymer sleeving. It’s a tough material that doesn’t get brittle or crack, even when the lamp is heating up and cooling down a hundred times a day.
Getting the grounding right
A good seal is a start, but it isn’t everything. We use ceramic insulators at the lamp contact points. This keeps the live current isolated from the metal chassis so the outside of the heater doesn’t become “hot” to the touch. And please, make sure the chassis is bonded to a dedicated earth ground. If a seal ever fails and you don’t have a clear path to ground, the whole fixture could become energized. That’s a scenario nobody wants.
The trade-offs (The part people forget)
There’s a catch. Tight seals are great for keeping water out, but they’re terrible for airflow. Because the air can’t move around the ends of the lamp, the inside of the box gets way hotter than you’d expect. If you use thin wires, that heat will eventually cook the insulation until it burns out. Double-check your wire gauge to make sure it can handle that extra ambient heat. And for some peace of mind? Wire everything through a GFCI. It’s a simple safety net. If a seal fails and moisture hits the terminals, the power cuts in a fraction of a second. Fast. Safe. Done.
