
Why We Use Explosion-Proof Quartz for Bathroom Mirrors
Ever stepped out of a hot shower and realized your mirror is basically a wall of fog? It’s annoying. To fix it, we use infrared heating lamps to keep the glass warm and clear. But here’s the thing: bathrooms are wet, steamy places. When you’re putting a heating element behind a mirror, you can’t just use any old glass tube. You need something that won’t turn into a disaster if things go wrong.
The “Explosion-Proof” Part
Standard quartz is great, but it has a weakness. If a stray drop of cold water hits a scorching hot tube, the glass can shatter from the shock. Not ideal. That’s why we stick with explosion-proof quartz. It’s got this clever internal mesh or a reinforced coating. So, if the glass does break, the filament stays put. It doesn’t spray shards everywhere or cause a dangerous electrical arc across a wet wall. It just… stays contained. Much safer for everyone.
Getting the Heat Right
These lamps use shortwave infrared. I like them because they push heat directly into the glass without turning your whole bathroom into a sauna. We usually wire these with R7s or other heavy-duty connectors. Why? Because they handle the current without melting the housing. There’s a bit of a balancing act here, too. If you cram too much power into a small space, you might actually crack the mirror. But if you go too low, the fog stays. You’ve got to find that sweet spot based on how thick the glass is.
A Few Tips for Installation
You can’t just toss these into any random fixture. Since they run hot, you need actual airflow. If you trap that heat behind the mirror, you’re asking for trouble—you could warp the frame or ruin the silver backing on the glass. Also, make sure your wiring is rated for “Zone 1” moisture. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. One last thing. Quartz is tough, but it hates fingerprints. If you touch the tube with oily fingers while installing it, those oils bake into the glass. This creates a “hot spot” that’ll burn the lamp out way faster than it should. Do yourself a favor: grab some alcohol and wipe the tubes down before you flip the switch.
