
Getting Wide-Format Low-E Glass Cutting Right
If you’ve ever tried to cut thick Low-E glass, you know the headache. One wrong move with the temperature and you’re looking at cracks or nasty edge chipping. It’s frustrating. When you’re working with wide sheets, your basic heating lamps just can’t keep up. That’s where we come in. We build continuous infrared heating units—some over 3 meters long—specifically to make sure every single inch of that glass is heated evenly.
The struggle with long lamps
You can’t just take a standard tube and stretch it out. If you do, you’ll end up with “cold spots” that ruin your consistency. We spend a lot of time dialing in the voltage and power density. The goal is simple: the glass needs to be exactly where it needs to be temperature-wise before it ever touches the cutting head. Now, high-wattage setups give you the punch you need, but be careful. You’ve got to make sure your wiring and power supply can actually handle the draw, or you’ll be spending your afternoon resetting breakers.
Building things to last
Heat is brutal on materials. We use high-purity quartz envelopes because they can take the beating of running 24/7. But here’s the thing: when a lamp is over 3 meters, it wants to sag. It’s just physics. To stop that from happening, we use reinforced support brackets. They keep everything straight without creating those dangerous hot spots on the quartz. Plus, we use industrial-grade connectors. They won’t melt or wiggle loose when the metal expands and contracts as it heats up and cools down.
The trade-offs you should know about
These units are great as drop-in replacements or for brand-new lines. But there’s a catch. Putting out that much heat is a lot for your shop to handle. If your ventilation isn’t beefy enough, the ambient heat just sits there. Before you know it, your conveyor electronics are baking, and that’s a recipe for a breakdown. To keep things smooth, we suggest pairing these heaters with precise PID controllers. It keeps the surface temperature exactly where it belongs, so you aren’t guessing.
