
Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are absolute nightmares for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and constant moisture. If we just tested a lamp on a dry workbench and called it a day, it would probably pop or short out a few weeks after you installed it. Nobody wants a dead lamp and a blown fuse on a cold Tuesday morning. That’s why we put every batch through a brutal damp-heat aging test before they ever leave our shop.
The battle against moisture
Most of these infrared lamps use quartz glass and tungsten filaments. The glass itself is tough, but the real trouble is the seal where the electrodes meet the quartz. Here’s the thing: in a steamy bathroom, water vapor finds the tiniest gaps and sneaks in. The second that moisture hits a red-hot filament, the tungsten oxidizes. It thins out, gets a hot spot, and then—snap. To stop that from happening, we basically build a sauna for our lamps. We crank the humidity to 95% and swing the heat up and down. If a lamp can’t survive 500 hours in that saturated steam, it has no business being in your home.
The “breathing” problem
It isn’t just about the water, though. It’s about the stress. We cycle the power on and off to mimic how you actually use your lights. When a lamp heats up and cools down quickly, the materials expand and shrink. We call it a “breathing” effect. This movement can actually suck moisture deeper into the housing. Now, you might think, “Why not just make the seal airtight?” Well, there’s a catch. If we make the seal too rigid, the lamp becomes brittle. It might keep the steam out, but it’ll crack the first time it hits a temperature spike. It’s a balancing act. We tweak the seal so it’s tight enough to block the steam, but flexible enough to handle the heat.
Real-world reliability
A lamp can pass a standard quality check and still fail the moment it hits a real bathroom. By forcing our components to take a beating in the humidity chamber, we weed out the “weaklings” in the batch. It means when you turn on your shower, the only thing you have to worry about is the water temperature—not whether your lights are about to flicker and die.
